Closely scrutinizing the documents in a State Archive of Poltava Oblast, I could only work with source documents or duplicates, dating back to Rumyantsev census of 1764-69, because Nazi fascists had devastated almost completely the Poltava archive during World War II. So I jumped to a conclusion that the city streets began getting their names from the fortress construction times at the end of 17th and at the beginning of 18th centuries. Then Poltava started to expand, new streets appeared with most old streets preserving their names. Street renaming began on a large scale in 1909, to 200th anniversary of Poltava Battle, the second big renaming happened in 1925, after October Revolution of 1917. And again, Poltava kept on expanding for quite a long time. The third big renaming started after the Ukrainian State had become independent in the early 1990ies, and this trend continues until now. I'll try to the best of my abilities to publish the street names in accordance with their old names in different historical periods, as well as the places of interest they city vividly displays. All modern-day pictures presented here are exclusive photos of author. The sources of information are listed in Feedback section. Please do not publish this site's content on other sites. The last decade for the city was the time of a change in its appearance, many new office blocks, and residential constructions have been built up everywhere, especially the downtown had undergone the most changes. In view of the fact that many old building are being pulled down, I try to save at least some of them in this pictures and tell you about their history.
